MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTORS TASK

Hype Williams
Hype Williams has created a number of music videos for many artists, including 2Pac ("California Love"), The Notorious B.I.G. ("Warning") and ("One More Chance"), Craig Mack ("Flava in Ya Ear" (Remix)), LL Cool J ("Doin' It"), Nas ("If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)", "Street Dreams", "Hate Me Now"), Missy Elliott ("The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly))", "She's a Bitch"), Busta Rhymes ("Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See"), TLC ("No Scrubs"),Kelis ("Caught Out There"), Jay-Z ("Big Pimpin'"), Kanye West ("Gold Digger", "Heartless", "All of the Lights", "Diamonds from Sierra Leone"), Aaliyah ("Rock the Boat"), Christina Aguilera ("Not Myself Tonight"), Cold play("Viva la vida"), Ne-Yo ("So Sick"), Hoobastank ("If I Were You"), Left Eye (The Block Party), t.A.T.u.("Gomenasai"), Ke$ha ("We R Who We R"), Meek Mill ("Levels"),"Massive Attack" and "Va Va Voom"), and Jack White ("Freedom at 21"). This is all the music videos that Hype Williams has directed. He has worked with a variety of different types of genres of music and loads of artists with different influences.

Hype Williams had a serices with MTV where they did a behind the scenes of the world of music celebrities. In my research i have found that the thing that has influenced Hype Williams, he started of filming rappers and the rappers themselves influences him to film them type of genres of music videos. He works mostly around the rap genre but has worked with other artists like Cold play and Va Va Voom.A signature style used by Williams throughout the vast majority of his videos (shot mostly with cinematographer John Perez) was the Fisheye lens which distorted the camera view around the central focus. Another "signature style" involves placing shots in regular widescreen ratio, while a second shot is split and placed in the upper and lower bars. The other reason i have chosen Hype Williams is because he started of as nothing but worked his way up and helping other artists through out their courier.

MUSIC VIDEO CONVENTIONS ANALYSIS

Music Video Conventions
Indie - The Killers - Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll

In most Indie music videos are Black and White and are very plain and dark, they normally playing musical instruments like a guitar or the bass or drums. You can see that they all dress the same style throughout everyone of there music videos and dress different to people who say do pop songs because its there style of music that influences what they wear and their hair style is different.

Hip Hop - Flume - On Top FT. T-Shirt

In this Music video by 'Flume' is categorised as hip hop, This is a classic music video where there is a gig that the band go to film and edit effects and other things over the top to make a music video, different to the indie one because this has allot more camera shots and angles. In this video there are allot of colours and shots of the crowd dancing and going insane to make the music video seem more effective. They are all dresses in snap backs and baggy clothes.

Pop - Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

This music video is by 'Imagine Dragons', its called 'Radioactive'. This song has been put
under pop because its a very fast song that tell a story like most pop music videos. They are
portraying toys getting put against each other to fight and people putting bets on it. Its a very
unusual video that i still don't understand why it relevant and why it links to the word
'radioactive' but i think that the randomenss is what attracts people to watch it.

Rock - Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie

This music video is by 'Red Hot Chilli Peppers'. It is a classic rock music video, they all have trucker caps with jackets with no t shirts on which makes them look more mad and rock like. They use microphones in this video and i can also point out they are on a roof sing nothing else but them dancing ontop of a roof top. You can also see that the hair style is diffrent as one guy has his hair dyed blue, this is i think something that they do to make them look more mad when they are singing ect. The way they dance is diffeent to all the other music videos, this one they are just jumping up and down and shaking their heads about.

OKGO MUSIC VIDEO POSTER

In the Ok Go music videos ‘White Knuckles’ they mostly use single camera shots that makes the video look simpler and effective. If you look at the music videos that Ok Go produce they are all very unusual and original ideas to make them stand out from other music videos. If you see as they progress their ideas and they get bigger and expensive as the band get bigger with expanding their ideas.
In the next music video ‘Needing/Getting’ they use a lot more camera shots including cameras that are attached to the car called go pros, they use these so that they can get the different point of views to make the music video more enjoyable and different.

MUSIC VIDEO'S RESEARCH - RECIPE

Music Video’s Research

70’s – Elvis Presley – The Wonder Of You

In this Music video by Elvis Presley there are only about three camera angles of him walking singing on stage, Not quite a entertaining music video, I don’t think that it gauges the audience attention when he is walking around the stage. In this video it is more focused on him as a performer and a star.

80’s – Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby

In this music video you can see as time goes on that they are filming different scenes and editing them putting them behind the music, As technology developed they don’t have many performance stage music videos and more of people acting in the music videos.

90’s – Britney Spears – Baby One More Time

In the 90’s Britney Spears was big hit, in most of her videos she is always acting and dancing and to portray herself in a sexy image to the public, As you can see as technology progresses the camera and image quality gets better.

2000’s – Justin Timberlake – Cry Me a River

The next music video is by Justin Timberlake, in the video the locations and the cameras and the sound quality are better so this means that they are spending more money to make more money, He portrays himself as a thug with a nice car to try and big himself up in the video.

2010’s – P!nk - Raise Your Glass

The next video is a chart hit by P!nk, In this music video she explains a story about people who are different to stand up and be proud, It is obvious because it links to the song name, She is trying to inspire people to do what the lyrics say. This last video is different to the first one because Elvis was walking around the stage with couple of camera angles bad camera quality, where as this music video has good quality and a different video overall, it wants to inspire people.

………………………………………………………………………….....

From the 70’s – 2010’s the music videos have changed dramatically from the camera quality to what is seen in the actual video. The technology has progress throughout the years as you can see and hear the quality of the sound and the quality of the picture. This means that as the videos have gotten better they have had to spend more money on the equipment to get better ideas and to change what they do in the next video to make more money.
